Tips for Maintaining Healthy Teeth Between Visits to Your Dentist

Visiting the dentist is probably not on your list of top activities, but it is a necessity. To make your visits to the dentist more enjoyable, it’s important to take care of your teeth at home.

Maintaining good oral health can save you from a lot of pain and dental procedures down the road. So here’s a guide to help you take care of your teeth between visits to your dentistry team.

Flossing Tips

Flossing once a day may seem like too much for your busy schedule. But it only takes a minute, and it does wonders for your oral health.

When you floss, you remove bacteria between your teeth and gums. But if left untouched, the bacteria will lead to plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay.

Use strong floss to avoid floss shredding between your teeth. You can also use flossing aids, such as water and floss picks to help you get used to this habit. And don’t be worried if your gums bleed a bit at first. This will stop after regular daily flossing.

Do You Need Mouthwash?

If used correctly, mouthwash is effective at reducing plaque and gingivitis. But for the mouthwash to work, you must follow the directions on the bottle. If it says to rinse for 60 seconds, then set a timer or count to 60. Don’t stop earlier.

Buying Toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes are the best option for brushing your teeth. They are more expensive, but they last much longer. They also clean teeth better than manual brushing. Look for CDA-approved brands when shopping for an electric toothbrush. If you are sharing this device, choose one with several coloured replaceable heads. These heads should be replaced every six months.

But if you have to buy classic toothbrushes, opt for those labelled “soft” and with small brush heads. Soft bristles still clean well but are not as rough on your teeth, gums, and enamel. And small heads allow you to reach further back in your mouth so you can effectively brush the back teeth. Try to replace your toothbrush every three months.

Brushing Tips

It’s important to brush after every meal and before bed. Gently brush in a circular motion so the brush covers the entire tooth and gums. Spend 60 to 90 seconds brushing your top teeth, and then repeat on the bottom teeth.

Practice Good Dental Habits

Visit your dentist every six months for a professional cleaning. A professional cleaning uses tools you probably don’t have at home. And during this visit, your dentistry team can catch any problems before they get worse.

Follow these tips for good oral health. You can prevent cavities, gum disease, and other tooth problems. And best of all, you will make your visits to your dentist easier and stress-free.
