HOW DENTAL IMPLANTS HELP
Strengthening Your Smile
with Dental Implants
Missing teeth can be uncomfortable, unsightly, and also lead to a number of oral and general health issues. For many years, the only solution for this included bridges and dentures. Today, with advanced dentistry, one of the best ways to replace a missing tooth is with a dental implant. Yazdani Family Dentistry is proud to offer this treatment. We are experts at replacing teeth with dental implants in Kanata and Kemptville.
Dental implants are a permanent way to replace a missing tooth with an artificial one. The implant is embedded into the jaw, and the new tooth is then attached to the implant. The implant effectively replaces the missing tooth’s root which helps to prevent jaw bone damage commonly occurring following a tooth loss. Unlike dental bridges and dentures, implants are entirely independent and do not require altering any healthy neighbouring teeth or tissues for support. In fact, they are designed to function just like a real, natural tooth. However, we may sometimes recommend other restoration methods as healthy jaw bone and gum tissue are required for a dental implant to be feasible.

Dental Implants to Replace
Missing Teeth
Dental implants aid you by preventing your surrounding teeth from shifting into the empty socket left over from your missing tooth (which can cause a number of other complications). They can also help to preserve your jawbone that exists under the missing tooth. Implants can also improve speech patterns, self-esteem, as well as overall oral health. Since surrounding teeth are not altered to support a dental implant, more teeth are left unaffected which improves their long-term health. Implants are also incredibly durable and can last a lifetime with proper care. They don’t need to be removed when sleeping or eating, making them incredibly convenient to live with.
With digital imaging, advanced ceramics, and state-of-the-art equipment, dental implants have become one of the most effective treatments used for gaps and missing teeth. If you’d like to repair your smile today, contact Yazdani Family Dentistry to schedule an appointment to learn more about your options.

A lasting Solution
Dental Implants are made to last
One of the single greatest benefits of replacing a tooth with a dental implant is how long they last. With proper oral care including brushing and flossing daily, a dental implant can last up to 20 years or more before it needs to be replaced!
Compared to dental bridges and dentures, the amount of maintenance work needed for a dental implant is nearly non-existent! When considering your options, think about how often you would need to visit the dentist to have dentures relined, refitted or replaced. Also, think about how often you would have to visit the dentist to have a dental bridge adjusted and maintained or replaced. These are things that don't need to be considered when getting a dental implant.
What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant consists of two primary components that come together to replace a missing tooth. The first component is a metal post, usually made of titanium, which is inserted into the empty socket where the tooth used to be. The second component is the tooth-shaped crown, which is generally made of porcelain and fastened to the post.
Preparing For
A Dental Implant Procedure
Post-Surgery Care
After the dental implant surgery, comes the recovery period. Typically, it takes between 4 and 6 months of recovery time for the implant post to fuse to the bone structure and be ready for the final crown to be fixed. The dentist will provide specific instructions and for caring for the implant post, and how to handle common post-surgery effects such as bleeding, swelling, and pain. It is extremely important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure the site heals properly and the implant post isn’t rejected.
Over the course of the recovery period, you will be asked to see your dentist at regular intervals so they can assess the recovery progress, and check for any complications that need to be addressed. Once the dentist determines that the post is set and ready, a porcelain crown will be made and attached to the post, completing the implant procedure. After that, all it needs is the same regular oral care that real teeth need.
Considerations For Getting a Dental Implant
There are a few factors that need to be considered before deciding to get a dental implant. The first and most important factor to consider is cost. A full dental implant procedure costs thousands of dollars when factoring in appointments, surgery, anesthesia and materials. It is possible to have some or all of the costs of the procedure covered by employment benefits or dental insurance, but that is only if the policy covers it. In many cases, financing options are available for the procedure, and it is one that we at Yazdani Family Dentistry are happy to offer.
Another thing to consider is medical history and any medications that could interfere with the surgery, or recovery process. For example, obese people are not good candidates for dental sedation, which may disqualify them for dental implant surgery. People who take blood-thinning medications are also not great candidates for surgery as it will be harder for them to form a blood clot at the site of the surgery which is important for the recovery process. Women who are prescribed antibiotics need to be careful if they are also taking birth control medication as the antibiotics can interfere with the effectiveness of birth control.
These considerations and more will need to be discussed with a dentist before dental implant surgery can be approved.
Why Dental Implants Are The Best Tooth Replacement Solution
Dental
implants are widely considered to be the best tooth replacement solution for a
number of reasons. For starters, they are made to last a long time. If properly
cared for, a dental implant can last up to 25 years or more before the post
needs to be replaced. Alternative solutions, such as dentures, flippers, or
dental bridges only last a fraction of that time, usually around 5 to 7 years
at most. This means dental implants are actually more cost-effective than any
other treatment solution despite it’s large upfront cost.
Consider
the time and costs involved with appointments for checkups, adjustments and
maintenance, and replacement appliances, and compare that to the upfront cost
of a dental implant, and it becomes clear that dentures or dental bridges cost
more over the lifetime of a single dental implant then what the upfront costs
are.
Secondly, dental implants help to preserve oral health in the event of lost teeth. When a
person loses an adult tooth, or multiple teeth, the underlying gum and bone
structures slowly begin to deteriorate. This deterioration will lead to more
teeth being lost, and the jawbone structure growing weaker and weaker, making
the use of their mouth for speaking and eating harder. The titanium post serves
as a replacement for the root of the tooth that will fuse to the bone structure
to give it and the surrounding gums the support it needs to stay healthy. None
of the other tooth replacement solutions previously mentioned provide this kind
of support.

Frequently Asked Questions
We get a lot of questions, naturally, about the wide range of dental services we perform here at our Kanata & Kemptville dental clinics. Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions. Don't see yours answered here? Feel free to reach out to Yazdani Family Dentistry.
The full procedure takes time and will require multiple appointments. Once the dental post has been implanted, it will take several months for it to heal and fuse to the existing bone structure. Implants in the lower jaw usually take about 3 months to heal. Implants in the upper jaw usually take about 6 months to heal. During this time, a temporary tooth can be provided.
Most dental implants last about 20 years. With proper care such as brushing twice daily, flossing and having regular dental cleanings, dental implants can last much longer, even a full lifetime!
Everybody’s benefits and dental insurance plans are different. Some plans cover procedures up to a certain dollar amount in a calendar year. Others cover some procedures and not others. It is important to review your coverage with us and consult your provider to determine what is covered. We also offer financing options to make the procedure more affordable for you.
After the surgery to install the implant post, your gums around the site of the implant will be tender and slightly swollen for a few days. During this time, it is best to avoid hard foods, and foods that are too hot or cold. Stick to lukewarm liquids and soft foods for the first few days, and when the swelling and tenderness subsides, you can start to incorporate foods you used to eat as long as you’re careful about chewing near the implant site. It is also important to avoid sticky foods as they can cause the implant post to shift if it hasn’t fully set.
Yes, you can. We recommend getting a dental implant sooner rather than later to avoid degradation of the surrounding gum and bone structures, but even if you have had a tooth extracted 3, 5 or even 10 years in the past, you can still potentially be eligible for a dental implant.
